We met waiting tables while we were in college at Saginaw Valley State University. Matt already worked at Applebee's when I started there. We were both seeing other people at the time, but he was easily the kindest person who had to suffer through my first few closing shifts. When other people left while I finished my closing cleaning jobs, Matt gave me a hand and made sure the people who had worked there forever didn't take advantage of the new people who didn't really know the exact parameters of their responsibilities. A few months down the road, not knowing that the other had broken up with the people we were originally dating, I was invited by Matt's room mate to a party at his apartment and the rest is history.

Klädsel & styling

I originally thought I wanted a lace dress. My dream dress growing up was a lace mermaid fit. I actually purchased a dress like that from a store closing sale, but decided it didn't really have the feel I wanted for the rest of the wedding. I ended up deciding I wanted something that was a bit more flowy and found a great deal on my champagne and white dress. Matt liked the look and feel of the tuxes, but went with gray rather than black. I fell in love with a combination of mauve, dusty blue, and a dark stormy blue. Since most of our wedding was just natural tones and greenery, it was easy to just go with all three for the bridesmaid dresses. We hadn't committed to a particular color pallet and just kept it simple. I loved it.

Så gick frieriet till

He told me a year or so ago that he knew he wanted to marry me about a year after we were dating while on the sky ride at dusk at Cedar Point on my birthday. When he decided to propose, that was his first thought. He thought he might ask me to marry him there, however we ended up going with a lot of people and I was stressed out about not having much extra money after just having closed on our first home. He had also considered doing so the day we moved into the house, but there was a lot of chaos and he again opted to wait. He said there were a few other times that he considered proposing but decided not to because of stress or other issues. One night a month or so after moving into the house we were invited out to a local bar to watch a band play. Being new to the area, and not knowing many people we jumped at the opportunity to try a new place and hopefully meet some new people. The band was just 'ok' and we really didn't make any new friends, but we had a few drinks and a lot of fun. We laughed together and had a ton of fun. On the way home we talked about our future. I'm one to go to bed remarkable early whenever I drink. As soon as we got home, I immediately went to change into pajamas. When I turned around to throw my clothes in the laundry basket he was standing in the doorway. The first thing he said was \"Don't be mad, I had other plans, but I love you so much.\" By the time he got down on one knee and opened the box, I had already said, \"yes!\"He actually hates the way I tell the story because he thinks it sounds like he didn't plan a good proposal, but I literally love telling people because the entire point is that when he tried to plan things perfectly, there was always a reason it didn't pan out. Instead, the night he proposed was just a random night. It was a night we went to an average bar, and saw an 'ok' band. We had a great time, because we love each other and make each other happy. He proposed on a night that reminded us both how great it is to have each other and how important we are to each other. It was perfect!

Bröllopets tema & inspiration

Matt and I moved to the Metro Detroit area in early 2016. In June 2017 we got engaged and started looking for wedding venues. We knew we were looking for something in Detroit, but we weren’t totally sure what since we knew we didn’t want to be married in a church and “rustic” really was not our style. I did a lot of online research trying to find the perfect place, but It only took one visit to the Jam Handy and we knew that was the place we had to be married! The Jam Handy was pretty much a blank slate as far as decorations. I’m a big DIY girl, so it seemed like a lot of fun to come up with the decor on my own. I really wanted everything to be authentic and true to who Matt and I are, so I was very particular about what I chose.

I’m also big on preserving the environment which was a huge driving force for some of our choices. The bottle ‘centerpieces’ were collected by family, friends, and most notably drivers from my work who deliver knives and other products to restaurants all over Michigan. Matt and (but mostly Matt) spent HOURS cleaning and scrubbing labels off of hundreds of bottles. The bottles were not only free and reused, but they also caught the light from our string lights on the ceiling in a way that made them shine beautifully. Now that we are finished with them, I intend to pass them on to another bride who might need them, or if they sit in my garage for too long, I’ll just recycle them. Our table numbers were one of my favorite details, and also took a lot of work. My dad, who works for the City of Saginaw with the water department, pulled those bricks out of the old streets. From what he told me, they were so old that horses used to walk on them before we had cars. He spent hours grinding off the old mortar or concrete, or whatever was holding them down and together so that the “Saginaw Block” logo was visible. After that he sprayed them with a clear coat and I added the numbers with a stencil. They were a perfect call back to the city I grew up in and the place where Matt and I met.I handmade our arch, but it took a lot of help from our friends in the end to make sure it was put up and finished at the venue. Our guest book was hand drawn; I used a bowl to make the perfect circle around the “H”, and we are hanging it in our living room once we get home from the honeymoon. I also made all of our bouquets. I purchased the flowers online and pieced them together. They never actually got completely finished (I didn’t wrap the stems or cover the wire that was poking out at the bottom of the stems), they turned out exactly how I wanted.

We opted to use artificial flowers in our bouquets and artificial greens on the table. It helped us spread out the cost and work as opposed to purchasing real greens and flowers. Since I did the arrangements myself, it would have been nearly impossible to pull off the morning of, or the night before. We really liked the industrial look and feel of our venue and thought we could better highlight that with greenery, rather than using a lot of flowers.

DIY med miljön i åtanke

Our wedding was very non-traditional and this was entirely because I wanted it to be about us rather than what people expect from a wedding. So many details came from things that were important to us. The table numbers came from the streets of the town I grew up in and the town where Matt and I met. Our DJ was someone we knew from the music scene that Matt was involved in and that was a big part of our relationship in our early days. We moved down to the Detroit area because we love the area and the history, we did our best to bring that into our wedding. We tried to bring in Detroit-born elements like Faygo pop and better Made Chips. Beside that we aren't really cake people, so we decided to skip it and go for pies. We also tried to keep the fruits in our pies as local as possible. I bought the fruit while it was in season and canned it the summer before the wedding. Two days before the wedding I popped the seals on the jars and baked the pies. One of the BIGGEST driving forces for my decor choices was the environmental impact our wedding would have. I chose to avoid disposable plastics as much as I could manage by using palm leaf plates, glassware, and such. I also loved the idea of reusing things that had already served another purpose. That is how we decided to use bottles as our centerpieces. They have now served 2 purposes before possibly finding themselves in the recycling (though they are still in my garage waiting to see if they will find a third purpose first). For the things we couldn't salvage, we purchased things that could be repurposed after we were finished! We have already resold some of the glassware we purchased for the bar, I intend to resell some of the florals/greenery used in our decor as well as 5 of my bouquets.

Gosh, I was really looking forward to literally every part of our wedding. I guess the part I thought the most about was actually walking down the aisle and seeing Matt at the other end of the room.

Era bästa tips till andra som planerar bröllop

HIRE GOOD VENDORS!! There is definitely a balance that you should try to find between great cost and great work! I believe I found that with most of my vendors. I honestly only had one that I didn't feel was 100% amazing. My photographer Ruby Hotelling, my coordinator Cindy Decker, my caterer celebrity catering, and my Venue The Jam Handy were all TOTALLY worth what we spent, though they weren't all the cheapest, they were imperative to having the amazing wedding that we did.As someone who cares a ton about the environment, I would also say, make some small changes to be more environmentally friendly. Our planet needs some attention at the moment and there are some things that can be as environmentally friendly as much as they are a part of your aesthetic. For example, we switched from high end plastic plates to beautiful leafware plates, which are ethically sourced, biodegradable and became an important part of our table design. We also used glass bottles that we cleaned from local businesses and can either be reused or recycled rather than buying expensive centerpieces that would be more limited in their later use. Similarly, we purchased glasses for our tables and bar instead of stocking it with plastics that would end up in a landfill (granted the bar tender did bring some that were used, but we did our best to limit our waste).
