Rustic Summer Wedding with Outside Ceremony: Elisabet + Mathias
Today we all get to enjoy this relaxed wedding from the Swedish west coast. And this is a true party! Photographer Amanda Falkman brings us the moment when Elisabet said yes to her Mathias, and what a lovely wedding it was! We adore the way the couple maximized the beautiful cove landscape where the ceremony took place and the rustic barn for the reception. So beautiful!
How the couple met
Elisabet: Being both from the Swedish west coast (Bohuslän) we met by accident at a bar in Stockholm, where one of us was brave enough to ask the other for a phone number. Five years later that same person pops the question, on a windy day in Gothenburg. The other person said yes.
Elisabet: Mathias chose a dark grey suit with suspenders and a bow tie, that created a dressed up, yet casual feel.
I knew early on that I wanted a more bohemian dress, and I wanted it to feel good and to bea able to move freely. I found a dress while searching for inspiration online, but I didn’t dare to order it since it had to be shipped from the States, without return warranty. After many further months of resultless searching for something similar I nervously ordered the dress anyway. And after just a few minor alterations I had the dress of my dreams!
Elisabet: We had no additional floral decoration, other than my and my bridesmaids’ bouquets. I really wanted a big bushy bouquet and searched everywhere for a local florist who make the kind of arrangements that I like. By accident I found a girl on Instagram who had just started her business as a florist, and she did the most amazing bouquets for us.
Intimate outdoor wedding
Elisabet: We live in Stockholm but we both come from Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast and for us it felt natural to get married there. Mathias come from the city of Lysekil and since we have spent many summers there it seemed like the obvious and best choice. We knew early on that we wanted to have the reception in some kind of barn or something equally rustic, but unfortunately that kind of official venue is very scarce in that part of the country. For weeks we searched for an appropriate venue but the ones we found were already booked. Through friends we finally found a barn normally used as a boat house that we could use. It contained nothing, except for a hose with running water, but in order to get the wedding we wanted we accepted the challenge. Within a week, and with a lot of help from our friends and family, we turned the place into our dream venue.
Getting married on the coast it felt right to have the ceremony by the sea. Not far from the barn lies an intimate cove that was just the perfect wedding spot. From there we walked together with our guests to the reception after the ceremony.
About the photographer Amanda falkman
Elisabet: One of the most important things for me was to find a photographer to capture our wedding day. Some persuasion was required to get Mathias on board with this idea, but today we are both eternally grateful for the amazing photos, and for my stubbornness. After a lot of research online we came in contact with Amanda through another photographer, and we immediately loved her work.
We didn’t want the classical delicate wedding pictures with backlight and awkwardness. Amandas images have a beautiful depth that tell a story. Neither Mathias nor me are particularly comfortable in front of the camera, and maybe we’re not the most photogenic, but we look good in ALL Amanda’s shots. She made us feel so relaxed and during the ceremony and the reception we hardly noticed her presence at all. I often find myself looking at our pictures and my heart gets so warm, all thanks to Amanda’s great work in capturing not just us, but also our guests and the entire day.
Romantic ceremony by the water
Elisabet: We had a simple ceremony by the edge of the water, which created that wonderful west coast feeling that we wanted. The only detail that we hade prepared was an arch of green where we stood during the ceremony. Our guests had gathered by the water, listening to the wonderful musicians we had found, while we slowly walked towards them to the sound of live music.
Rustic wedding in natural colors
Elisabet: We had no particular theme for our wedding, but we wanted it to feel relaxed, rustic and be set in natural colors. We also wanted to make it feel personal and we planned the whole wedding ourselves, in every little detail. For instance, we designed the invitations ourselves, we pained the seating chart ourselves and we and our families made all the desserts ourselves.
We searched a lot for inspiration online, in particular for DIY weddings. Both on Pinterest but also here at the Sisters in Law blog.
