Rural Wedding in a Mansion on the Countryside: Simon + Felicia
A lovely day in September, Felicia and Simon got married at Schenströmska Country House in Västerås. It became a beautiful, romantic wedding characterized by a strong sense of love and joy. Together with wonderful photos from Louise Johansson we now get to dream away and take part of the couple's story about their wedding day and some cute anecdotes. Congratulations to the marriage, Simon and Felicia, and thank you for letting us take part of your big day!
HoW felicia och simon MET EACH OTHER
Felicia: I saw Simon on an evening in May at the bar Cirkus in Västerås. "Who is that, I have to find out" was my first thought. I gathered courage and went forward and said, "You look adorable”. It was well received and since then it has been us!
Felicia: We were on a surfing holiday in Bali and one rainy afternoon, alone in the hotel pool overlooking the sea, Simon asked "Do you want to marry me?". I was so surprised that I started laughing (so shameful but it felt so unreal & nice that I was sure he was joking, we also have a very jokey jargon between us so I had to double check that it was for real). As soon as I realized it was real I said YES without blinking! Simon had bought a couple of nice gold earrings as a symbol and then we chose rings together when we got home from the holiday.
BEST MEMORY FROM THE BIG DAY
Felicia: The whole day was the best and finest day that I couldn't have imagined even in my wildest dreams, but the moments I get goose bumps only by thinking of are still the walk into the wedding ceremony and the first look that was totally crazy emotionally. To see Simon, first for a moment and then together with all the loved ones was so unreal and I was really shaky. I am emotionally normal but what I experienced during those moments was crazy bananas! I seriously thought that I was going to faint and I held on so hard to my dad's arm on the way into the ceremony, I was terrified of fainting and mess up the dress.
Felicia: The wedding ceremony was wonderful! We had the ceremony inside an old forge at the Schenströmska Country House. The forge has been left in its origin, the blacksmiths basically let go of their sledges and left the building. It is an incredibly cool environment, dark and a little dirty but then there are the roof that let in light from above and creates a magic light. That was what we fell for, we supplemented with candles and created a little contrast with pink and white heart-shaped balloons.
I walked in with my Dad and our little dog Jack to Elton John's "Your song". I was lucky to have my dad as support because without him I had probably collapsed along the way of all the emotions that bubbled within me, it was the happiest and the finest moment I have ever experienced. It was such a compact feeling of love in the room when I walked in, all loving faces lit up by the sunshine that came in through the skylights, my lovely bridesmaids and Simon's little brother and best man who stood there waiting with Simon ( the world's finest and my future husband!!!) and our other dog, Mango.
We had a very simple ceremony that we did not practice for but which became so nice in all its simplicity. After we changed rings and kissed like newlyweds, Simon's little sister sang "Wherever you go", so nice that my heart almost exploded! The wedding day had just begun and it was already the finest we have ever experienced. May add that we both wept rivers before. during and after the wedding, but the make-up did not mess up!
INSPIRATION AND CHOICE OF THEME
Felicia and Simon: We chose completely what we felt suited us and our guests and what we thought was nice. It was not a consistent theme but we wanted to convey a feeling of love, joy & that everyone would feel "at home" and comfortable. Pinterest was a great inspiration for the table setting and decor. Schenströmska was so nice in itself so we just had to put our own little touch on the premises we were in.
CLOTHES FOR THE WEDDING DAY
Simon: I knew quickly that I wanted a dark navy suit with brown accessories, so one weekend in January we went to Brothers in Västerås and found a suit with all the accessories. It fitted like a glove, but needed to be corrected a bit in the legs and in the sleeves but it was easily fixed. We found the shoes the same day.
Felicia: My journey was a bit more complicated, I knew what I didn't want but it was all the more difficult to decide... As soon as we decided that it was in September the following year we were going to get married, I started looking. I quickly fell in love with Grace Loves Lace, who frequently appeared on Pinterest, but it felt hard and especially expensive, to order from Australia. What would I do if it didn't fit?! I thought maybe there was something on the secondary market, so I went out hunting on different sites, and found a dress a girl wanted to sell. It turned out that she moved abroad but that the dress was at her parents' home, so that I could try it out. We booked a date and on January 6, 2018 I sat in the car with my best friend Sahar and my little sister Alicia to go to Gothenburg. There, in addition to the Grace Loves Lace dress, I had also booked fittings at some wedding shops. I tried and tried but nothing felt completely right. In the evening we went to a small village in the country where the GLL dress was. And it was perfect! It felt completely like me, and it fitted perfectly. After a cup of coffee, I paid the money to the mother and the dress was mine! I was so happy, I went and squeezed my dress that was hidden in the closet every day.
But then a few weeks went by and I started to doubt, was the dress too untraditional? What would people think? I bought one more dress in panic: a creamy dream from Ida Sjöstedt, also at second hand. But was it really right? I called in mom and dad, who are my most honest judges (Simon didn't want to see the dress before the wedding). Mom could not decide which one was "the dress" but then dad got to see the GLL dress he started crying immediately and then I knew it was right. On the day I felt so nice and like myself, just what I was looking for.
Felicia: We decided pretty quickly after some Pinterest dives and a visit to the florist that we wanted silver dollar eucalyptus in combination with pink roses. It was the combo on all the tables, in the bouquets of the bridesmaids and so I got a giant bouquet of the same combo but with the addition of pink-lilac and white roses. Simple and romantic, just as we wanted it.
Styling AND ACCESSORIES
Felicia: Simon wanted brown as a color for his accessories, it fitted nicely to the surroundings and my bouquet and my shoes. I got to borrow jewelry from Caroline Svedbom via my friend Sahar. They perfectly matched the little bohemian / beige style of the dress. Both earrings and bracelets were also shaped like hearts. I wanted the hairstyle simple, the plan was a soft half updo, but on the wedding day I regretted it and chose to have it released with loose curls instead. I got help to blow dry and curl the hair. Foolish as I am, I fixed the last thing myself and skipped all the styling products. I wanted the hair to be natural, soft and rather mischievous than perfect. I did the make-up by myself and made my usual ten-minute everyday makeup with a small addition of brown eyeliner along the upper lash line. I had intended to hire a make-up artist but after all felt that I wanted to be myself on our day.
ABOUT THE PHOTOTGRAPHER Louise - Wild stories
Felicia: I found Louise via Instagram. I scrolled and searched around lika a maniac to find pictures that felt right for us. I took on the task of finding a photographer because I am extremely uncomfortable in front of the camera and felt it was important to find someone who was good at catching natural moments. As soon as I found Louise and scrolled through her pictures I got a good feeling. I showed Simon who was also delighted!
I sent an email to Louise and quickly got an answer that she was available on our date. We booked a phone meeting to get to know each other a bit. Simon and I talked to Louise for a whole hour and afterwards we felt "WOW". From the start, Louise was professional, warm, responsive and incredibly calm and genuine. We did not regret one second that we chose Louise! We felt so comfortable and safe with her. When we got the pictures we were confirmed that Louise is all she seems to be: accurate, natural, professional and BEST. The way she documented our wedding was so nice and the pictures convey what we experienced, just as we wanted.
RURAL WEDDING AT Schenströmsta COUNTRY HOUSE
Felicia och Simon: Yes, it suited us perfectly! Everything we were looking for was within short walking distance, a unique wedding venue (a forge from the 18th century), a fantastic party room with room for dinner, dance and bar (the Stable). In addition, there were sleeping places for all guests, so that those who wanted to sleep and continue the celebration with a common brunch on Sunday, could stay over. As the icing on the cake, we could bring food for our dogs in the room and they were welcome in the ceremony room, which was a must for us as we are a family. In addition to that, all food was lactose-free in the basics, and nothing we needed to pay extra for (we are both intolerant to it so when we were told that the mansion does everything lactose-free we felt that it had to be fate!).
TIP FOR OTHERS WHO ARE GETTING MARRIED
- Book a photographer as soon as you have decided on the date, the photos are the concrete memories you have for the rest of your life, so make sure you choose a photographer that suits you!
- Ignore what others think, make your wedding YOUR wedding. If you are enjoying it, your guests will too.
- Plan, buy and decide in good time and in portions, we had Friday nights as our planning evening. Then we ate something good, drank champagne and checked off at least two stuff on our to-do list. In this way, we made the planning something fun. We never felt stressed, hopefully you are getting married just once so be sure to enjoy the process!
- Do not squeeze in too much during the day, everything takes longer time than you think. Waiting rather than stressing. At least for your part. The guests was appreciated that there were a lot of activities, from mingle with games before the toast for us to beer pong and darts during the evening.
- Keep your guests satisfied! We made every effort to ensure that all guests had even blood sugar throughout the day. We offered food, fruit, snacks and drinks right after the wedding, the dinner started already at 5.30 pm with the dessert serving at 21.00 and the late night food presented at midnight. In this way, we made sure that the guests would be happy and able to have fun and it worked. 90% of guests were awake until the DJ stopped playing, including Simon's grandmother! The brunch the next day was also an appreciated feature, food is important in other words. It is not cheap with so many meals but we have received many comments afterwards that the food was very good and that time went way too fast, a good sign!
Thank you Simon and Felicia for sharing your big day with us all!
