Rural And Bohemian Summer Wedding: Karin + Stefan
When Karin and Stefan got married last August they threw a rural and love filled party in the picturesque village of Gränna in the middle of southern Sweden, known for its unique “polka candy canes”. With its cobble stone roads, wooden houses and peace and quiet, the village itself, where the couple often spend their summers, was a major inspiration when planning the wedding.
The bride Karin describe the day of the wedding as the one they always dreamed of, with lovely weather and the rays of the evening sun finding their way in through the sparsly placed wooden planks of the barn in which they held the reception. Today, the bride brings us on a walk down memory lane when she tells us about her and Stefan’s wedding, eternalized by Jana Julian Photography.
How the couple met
Karin: I had a blog that Stefan found. He read it in secret for six months and then he wrote me a message on Facebook. We went on a date and fell in love. And me who never thought I would get married! In my view, Stefan was pretty clear on how he felt on this matter, and frankly I thought it was never going to happen, but I felt that it would be an acceptable price to pay since I knew that he was the man I wanted to spend my life with. But when we found ourselves on a rental car parking lot on a holiday in Florida I said, as a joke, “just look at how much money we are spending, why don’t we just get married here and maybe we wouldn’t think a wedding is such an expensive thing”. I immediately saw in his eyes that he wanted to marry me someday. I started to cry right away and for me this was our actual proposal. But I also made clear that he had to ask me properly. And so, a few days later, when we snuck out for a night swim at the resort we were staying at he asked me for real, under a beautiful starlit sky in Florida Keys!
The most emotional moment on our wedding day was when we saw each other for the first time. I waited on a bridge and Stefan came walking on a path in the forrest. The was so much emotion in the air that we could hardly breathe.
About the photographer, Jana Julian
Jana is the most amazing photographer I know. Here pictures are so special and she captures emotions in a unique way and creates a mood that is such a luxury to look back on after the wedding. A dream photographer!
Clothing, hair and makeup
I knew in my head just how I wanted my dress to look. For sure, I didn’t want a typical princess wedding gown, but a romantic boho dress. The first dress I saw I immediately felt that I wanted. It wasn’t even a wedding dress, or expensive for that matter. I ordered it and loved it! Stefan wore a three piece blue suit with brown shoes and a blue bow tie. It was much harder to find the right clothes for him, but in the end we did it!
Stefan loves when I wear my hair braided so that’s how I wanted my hair on our wedding day. My friend Emma did my makeup, in a natural and discreet way. I felt like I had come from a fairytale.
Gränna church is on the same street of our summer house. We pass it several times a day and it is where my grandfather and grandmother are burried. Our priest is an amazing man who made the ceremony a safe, beautiful and happy experience.
We were nervous and very emotional. But we were also able to stay in the moment the entire time and it was so wonderful to have all our friends and family present, cheering us on. We were crying, laughing and loving every moment! Stefan’s best man and my three bridesmaids helped to lift the mood even higher. When the singer Engla sang “You’re Simply the Best” in a soft version, it was so beautiful that the church walls almost collapsed.
Klevens loge, the old barn where we held our reception, is one of our favourite places in the area. It has a specatular view and is just the right kind of rural for a wedding. The place is run by the lovely Roger and Gunilla, who made sure we could have the wedding day just the way we liked it. The most important thing for us was that this was going to be a fun and lovely day for everyone involved.
One of the best memories from our wedding day is our arrival from the ceremony to the reception. I came riding and Stefan biking. It was so much fun!
The food was magical. One of my best friends, who’s name is also Stefan, made a fantastic vegetarian buffet and his chefs were barbequing outside the barn.
I cried non stop all day, but I completely lost it when Stefan took the stage and sang a song that he had written for me. My napkin was totally soaked from all my tears!
advice from the bride
Make sure you have as much as possible prepared in advance. And decide a time when enough is enough and from there on out it is just your day - and then enjoy it! I have heard from so many people that they stressed until the last minute and couldn’t fully enjoy themselves when the moment came. I am so happy that we could be totally there throughout the whole day!
