Engagement Photography + Love Story: Andi + Alex

We usually share love stories from weddings where the couple tells us almost everything about their wedding day. Today, we share a love story before the wedding where the bride to be, Andi, tells us all about the proposal and wedding planning.

The couple met while working on a superyacht together. Alex was a 2nd officer on the boat, and Andi was a scuba instructor. They fell in love quickly and have been together for over 3 years now. They are planning their wedding as we speak, which will be in Spain June 1st, 2019. We wanted to know more, so we asked the bride to be, Andi, to answer a few questions. Enjoy!

Their engagement session was captures by Don Bringas, who captures the essence of Andi and Alex as a couple. Laughing, being silly and then having a good time on the water. It’s a wonderful series of photographs!

You have told us how you guys met, but can you tell us about the proposal?

Andi: I absolutely love how Alex proposed to me, as I am sure that all women feel the same about their stories! Because Alex works at sea for 3 months and then is home for 3 months, there are challenges with time being spent away from each other. Last year Alex was missing my Birthday for the second year in a row - it is part of the job but it sucks, none the less. He felt bad and was planning a trip home the weekend after to come spend some time with me for a late birthday weekend (or so I thought). This was November 1st and my Birthday was October 30th.

We were staying up late watching Netflix and having a generally cosy night when Alex told me I should probably start getting ready for bed as we had an early morning planned. I was a bit confused as I thought maybe we would go to dinner and that was it. The next morning we got up and he told me to pack a bathing suit and pack very warm clothes and to also pack my passport. I was now thoroughly confused and had no idea where we would be going.

Alex had joked that maybe we would be going on Birka Paradise, but when we passed by the boat I knew we were headed for the airport.

When we got to the airport Alex checked us in and refused to let me see the tickets, making sure it was a surprise right until we boarded the plane. When I saw we were going to Luleå, it did nothing to enlighten me as to what he had planned. I had only be in Sweden for about 6 months at this point and had no idea where that was, haha! Alex seemed a bit stressed out and I was really nervous for some reason- I was feeding off his energy and thought that he just had a lot on his mind (Obviously he did). Once we landed Alex picked up a rental car and we drove an hour to the Tree Hotel. It was incredible beautiful. We got checked into the room and there was a nice bottle of champagne waiting. At this point I kind of had a though to myself, that it was so incredibly romantic and too much for my birthday, but I still never expected what was coming. Alex put on a playlist of the corniest, most romantic music, that is 100% not his usually taste and we sat down to enjoy a glass of champagne. As I was looking out the window, he kind of shoved me up pointing out the window and I thought maybe there was a moose or northern lights or something because he was so frantic! I turned around and he was on one knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. He was crying and barely got the words out to ask me to marry him and I immediately started crying and said “Of course I’ll be your wife!” It was such a beautiful and special moment and we just held each other for a very long time. We enjoyed a lovely dinner a few hours later followed by a hotter under the stars. I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more and I appreciate all the thought and love that he put into it.

- Why did you choose Spain for you wedding?

We chose Spain for a few reasons. Because I am from the states and he from Sweden, we wanted to have the wedding on neutral territory. Also, we wanted to make sure the weather was nice and warm with little chance of rain, since June can be slightly unpredictable. Also, Alex worked in Spain once upon a time, and has a soft spot for the country.

How is your wedding going to look like? What inspires you?

Andi: This is a tricky question. I have been in full stages of planning for over a year now and am just getting to the finer visionary details. I love weddings with a rustic quality but also love the simplicity of modern touches. The pampas grass trend has been a favorite of mine and I love small details like mismatched glasses and/or chairs. I am a very indecisive bride until the last minute! At first I though I wanted a full lace gown, but I ended up with a simplistic, backless gown. It will be interesting to see how the vision comes together over the coming months. The most important thing for Alex and I has always been that our guests have an amazing time celebrating us as a couple, which is why we will be hosting a weekend long “party”. Drinks and canapés the day before the wedding, the wedding, and then a pool party/paia meal the day after.

Is there anything you think is hard when coming to planning your wedding?

Andi: Yes! Planning a wedding from another country always has its challenges. We have a wedding planner in Spain to helps us navigate, but it can still be hard when you are not in the thick of it witnessing all of the planning and putting all of your trust in one person. The other thing that has been challenging but really fun is blending both the traditions of an American and Swedish wedding together. I have been to 4 Swedish wedding now, and think they are so much more fun that American wedding, but there are definitely some little things that I feel it is important for me to try and incorporate. So yes, definitely hard when you have an American bride, Swedish groom, with a British Wedding Planner in Spain!
